Quote from Michael Gutteridge a prominent Manchester Artist who I have a great deal of respect for, his artwork is fantastic
I'm flattered you should want my opinion on your artworks, I'm not even sure about my own let alone anyone else's but I'll give it a go. I quite liked most of them, I liked the strong colours and the boldness of some of the brushwork, very direct, with some energy, a bit like Leon Kossoff, yet I noted you kept referring to them as impressionistic yet I would say they seemed more expressionistic myself, with the bold use of colour and all. My favourite painting was probably the London Taxi Jam.

Been looking to buy some original art for some time and came across Andrew’s paintings, could tell the Lowry influence but the paintings have an originality and style of their own. Dear Andrew,
I am a history student at the University of Manchester and I am currently writing an assignment on the Moss Side riots in the 80s. I came across your YouTube video on the riots, with you speaking over your painting. I found it really interesting and would love to use your words in my essay. Is there any chance you would be able to email me a copy of your words over the video?
I would also love to know a bit more about yourself- are you native to Moss Side and experienced the riots first hand?
Thank you in advance, and I hope to hear from you soon,
Dear Andy,
Thank you so much for all this information! Its super helpful- I’ll send the essay over when its finished.
Comment on the Lass O Gowrie pub painting
Hi Andrew, I've just read your poem about the fictional scotsman inspired by the Lass O'Gowrie. I liked it very much. I'm part of a U3a writing group where I live and I wondered if you would mind if I read your poem out to the other members. Of course I would make it plain that you wrote it, I write mainly fiction and although I like poetry I don't have any talent for writing it. Margaret

Your Picture is beautiful..keep painting..it is a healer.Your Artwork is perfect. by Helen
We saw Andrews Art in a lovely new gallery walkway in Sale and were immediately taken with his evocative style. When we saw his picture of Hotspur House we new we had to buy it as we have a family connection to the buiiding. Andy then hand delivered it the next day (we happened to live near Him)and we had a lovely chat about the building and his art. its a real pleasure to support a local artist who is clearly passionate about their work and that comes through in his pieces. By Tim
We Saw Andys work on display in Sale and instantly connected with it, particularily the paintings of Deansgate. it was very easy to contact him and he quickly got in touch. He was so warm and enthusiastic which gave a personal touch to the print we eventually bought. He framed it for us . we wish him every success i n the future with his Art as he is very talented by Carolyn

Feedback: Well what can I say except Andrew is a Gentleman first and foremost . I asked him if he would do a painting of My Son who enjoys Boxing. He agreed and he showed me step by step the drawing first then we discussed colours for the painting . Andrew had captured My Son’s likeness and his use of colours are Amazing. Nothing was too much .This Man has such a fantastic talent! He even delivered the painting to my door himself and it was also nicely wrapped. I absolutely love it and the great thing is he donated a proportion of the Money to Mark Sproston’s Project 23 Mental Health Group. What a tremendous gesture!
My next #artistoftheday is #AndrewAlanMatthews. He is a proud #Mancunian artist who grew up in Moss Side. He attended Claremont Road Junior School and Yew Tree High School. He lived in Salford for 18 years and used to visit the Salford museum to admire LSLowry's works. He started drawing at an early age and he reminisced to me that "I was about 6 or 7 years old when I found a love of art. I used to draw spiderman pictures in class".
His father bought him a good quality paper book and oil pastels. He started to draw wildlife. “My first painting was of a falcon and a bowl of flowers for my Gran" At Yew Tree High, his art teacher was Mr De Vere. He was inspirational and whilst the other kids had to follow the teacher, he was allowed to explore art in his own way. He worked in the textile design industry working for all the major textile companies in the UK reproducing accurate, fine quality, hand painted artwork for many years.
He studied at MMU for a BA(Hons) Textiles Degree graduating in 1999.
He suffered acute stress in the last year of his career as a textile design separation artist and left to pursue a degree, in the winter of 1996 he tried to commit suicide and had several breakdowns over many years.
To help overcome this stress he developed his work stress & stress and anxiety collections with the aim at helping people understand stress and breaking the stigma of mental health issues. He has produced art related videos to help people overcome stress. These days he chooses to paint in a relaxed way and helps relieve his stress.
The #UniteUnion are using his work-stress collection images in their training and development department to help people overcome stress and support mental health. He has had positive feedback from the charity 'Mind'. . He started selling his art in 2011 with www.artgallery.co.uk and set up a website last year. https://andrewalanmatthews.co.uk/
One of the trademarks that I particularly admire is the emphasis he puts on the use of dark and light in his cityscapes giving a modern urban feel and depth to the artwork.
BEE Positive is his life motto.
His website & videos are inspirational.

I am very proud to have received an email from the Editor of The City through the eyes of the artist. I have submitted 12 images for selection for the book. I would be very honoured if I was chosen.
Name Emma Bennett Email themanchesterartbook@gmail.com Message Dear I hope this finds you well. You may already be familiar with The City Through The Eyes of Its Artists book series of which I am the Editor; Five hard-covered books which show iconic cities through the eyes of the artists they inspire, with a further two titles to be published this year. So far we have worked with almost 400 artists on the book series which have attracted endorsements from over 65 celebrities, including Sir Paul McCartney, Dame Julie Walters, Stephen Fry, Claudia Winkleman, and Miriam Margolyes. I am delighted that the fabulous city of Manchester has been chosen for the focus of the next book and having looked at your great work on-line, I would like to invite you to submit images free for consideration for inclusion in The Manchester Art Book, to be published in 2023. There is no submission or inclusion fee at any stage if your work is chosen for inclusion. Each book has its own website and we also have a new series site at: https://www.thecitythroughtheeyesofitsartists.com/index.html
The concept of the books is to show iconic cities through the eyes of the artists they inspire working in a broad range of contemporary media and styles, whilst providing a platform for artists to show their work to a local but also world-wide audience. The submission process is a straightforward one with images sent via email or WeTransfer. Images for publication in The Manchester Art Book will be chosen by a local panel of art and city experts who will meet to make a final selection for inclusion. If your work is chosen you will be asked to sign an Artist Licence Agreement which gives us permission to use your image(s) solely for use in the publication and associated press. Of course you retain all copyright to your image(s) and can use them in all the usual ways us artists do to sell and promote our work. All information about how you can submit can be found here: https://www.thecitythroughtheeyesofitsartists.com/manchesterhome.html
If you would like to get a sense of the scale and reach of the books, just Google each title, or pick up a copy; they are available in bookshops, online and world-wide. The current titles in the series are; The Cambridge Art Book, The Oxford Art Book, The Edinburgh Art Book, The Liverpool Art Book and The Dublin Art Book, with The Bristol and Bath Art Book and The Birmingham Art Book to be published this July. Alongside every image in the 128 page books is the artist's name and picture title, whilst in the back a biography section lists each artist, with page credits, a brief biography and website link. Artists report this has led to higher sales and exposure, whilst in Oxford, Cambridge and Liverpool artists have got together as a result of the book to exhibit together and form art groups. The Publication of each book is celebrated by a launch in a prominent book shop in the city with drinks, speeches, a mini exhibition and just a great opportunity for all the artists featured to come together. Please have a look at the website for submission information, but in brief: we are looking for artists of all ages, experience and stages in artistic careers who are expressing what they love about Manchester through a broad range of media and styles (but no pure
photography). We love quirky, contemporary and something a bit different. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to email. If you know of any other artists who might be interested please share this email with them, the quality of the books depends on a wide range of artists and media. We are accepting submissions now until the deadline of May 20th. If you would like to submit please do so by looking first at the website:
https://www.thecitythroughtheeyesofitsartists.com/getinvolved.html If you intend to submit, it is always useful to hear from you so that we can create a digital file for you. This helps later on with the extensive organisation that goes into producing a book. If you have any questions please just email. It would be fantastic to have your images for consideration as they fit the vibrant and modern feel we are after. If you would like to know more about me, my art website is: www.emmabennettcollage.co.uk With thanks and all best wishes, I look forward to hearing from you, Emma Emma Bennett themanchesterartbook@gmail.com

I am very honoured to be contacted by the chief football writer from the Athletic
Hi Andrew - hope you're well. I'm the chief football writer for The Athletic - an app/website that is the sports arm for the New York Times. I was previously chief football writer for the Guardian. I'm writing about it being 20 years since the Etihad stadium opened, or the COMS as it was then - for the Commonwealth Games. I was writing about how it had changed that part of Manchester but also how Moss Side had changed in that time (20 pubs closed down sadly, without the match trade). I know the area well as I moved up in 1998 and I was delighted - as someone who spent a lot of money this way on match-days - to see your 'Mind Your Car, Mr' painting (brilliant!). I saw that you grew up in the area and was hoping I could include you as one of the voices in my article. I'm meeting a community leader on Monday but would really like to speak to someone who grew up in the area and remembers the days of Maine Road etc. It would be great to speak if you had some time on the phone for a bit of nostalgia. Kind wishes,
Hi everybody I am very honoured to be included in an Article for- The Athletic, the sports arm of the New York Times. My Mind Your Car Mr painting is featured alongside the story of Maine Road. A big Thankyou to Daniel Taylor Chief sportswriter for the Athletic. Here is the link to the story.
https://theathletic.com/3417752/2022/07/17/etihad-maine-road-city/
Extract of my story from the Article with permission from Daniel Taylor . to see the full article click on the link
“There used to be a hairdresser's just up the road. It was called Artie’s and, back in the day, a lot of the players would walk in to get a trim straight after training. You’d often hear that such-and-such a player had come out of the ground and gone in for a haircut.”
Andrew Matthews, the Moss Side-born artist, is reminiscing about what it was like to grow up in the shadow of Maine Road, formerly the home of Manchester City, and one particular memory that has stayed with him all these years.
“I went past one night and there was a gunman firing out a car. I ducked down. The bullet went over my head and shot the ‘A’ out of the sign for Artie's. You had to be quite streetwise growing up in Moss Side, I suppose. But I found lifelong friends there and had a happy childhood. It was a proper community. And the place would come alive on Saturdays if City were playing.”
Matthews spent a lot of time in Cowesby Street, in particular, because that little strip of red-brick terraced houses was his turf when it came to motorists parking their cars on match-days. Every driver was obliged to make a financial contribution to make sure nothing untoward happened to their car. Matthews has even dedicated one of his paintings – “Mind your car, Mr?” – to that once-familiar racket.
“It was a way for us to earn a few quid for sweets and fireworks at a time when we were all poor. Or we’d go into the alleyways, where people used to dump piles and piles of rubbish, to look for discarded push bikes. It was like finding gold. We’d rebuild these bikes and sell them to Nev's second-hand shop on the corner. They were heady days.”
I went down to see the ground for one last time,” says Matthews. “I went with a few mates and we managed to get inside while they were tearing the place down. My mate took a chair from the directors’ box. I got a seat from the Main Stand. But we didn't get a lot of sympathy from the bulldozer crew. They were all United fans and they were throwing the seats into a huge pile. I was absolutely gutted. And they were laughing their heads off.”
“The area has completely changed,” says Matthews. “City moving out was always going to hit the area hard. It took a lot of business away. I remember hearing Maine Road was closing down and thinking, ‘Well, what are we going to do?’ It was such an iconic ground. It had been there since 1923 and then, all of a sudden, it was gone.”
Matthews, whose artwork includes a number of Moss Side-themed paintings, started putting his memories on canvas because he wanted to “help rebalance the negative portrayal of the area from the 1970s and 1980s … it’s my way of trying to turn a negative into a positive.”
------------------------
I am very honoured and humbled that my artwork has now been accepted to be exhibited at Salford Museum & Art Gallery . the exhibition will run from the 18th June 2022 - September 2022
It has been my life's ambition to have my artwork displayed on these walls next to my Art Idol L.S Lowry. to say I am over the Blue moon is an understatement.
Good afternoon, Thank you for submitting your work for selection in the Open [3] exhibition at Salford Museum and Art Gallery. The selection panel met earlier this week and included Stephanie Fletcher, Assistant Curator for the University of Salford Art Collection and Naomi Lewis, Strategic Lead for Salford Museums and Galleries. I am pleased to inform you that we have made the decision to include one of your entries in the Open [3] exhibition. We hope to see you on 16 June for Salford Rediscovered or any time from 18th June when the exhibition is open to the public.
